Cruise Trip – It finally happened and we had a fantastic cruise vacation on a Princess cruise.
We always thought about this and always ended up in some beach vacation. I’m not against beach vacations but the cruise is a different beast.
There were so many reasons why it didn’t happen, and after having casual discussions around the same topic with friends who didn’t cruise so far, I found many of the reasons were pretty common.
And after coming back from the cruise, many of the reasons which prevented me from taking a cruise vacation simply came out to be myths.
So it all started within my home when my wife wasn’t comfortable with a 7 days cruise, and that to from Fort Lauderdale, that was 12-hour drive from our place in Charlotte. At the same time, none of the good and affordable cruises were available from within a better driving distance.
Anyways, so somehow I convinced her and booked the trip and the outcome after seven days was that it was fantastic.
Since the main emphasis of this story is to bust some of the popular myths of not going on a cruise, I’ll not talk about my trip in general and talk primarily on the myths.
Driving long distance to take a cruise trip, and returning back after the cruise is done
Depends where you live, but in case if you have to drive a bit longer to get a cruise, in my opinion, do so. The reason is that cruise vacation is just like staying in a hotel, and it’s unlike any other vacation where you need a vacation after coming back from a vacation.
You should never plan a cruise trip alone, always try to go with a group of people so you don’t get bored
Well, I used to think the very same but after my first cruise trip, I have changed my mind. Although we had a great company that we enjoyed and would like to go again with the same group I don’t think you’ll get bored if you go again on a cruise. Cruise is one place where there’s always some action going on.
You’ll get motion sickness so take the prescribed medicine from the day one
In our 7 day trip I felt the movement a bit of sickness on day 5, and day 5 only. And I’m one guy who can’t go on any roller coaster, irrespective of how slow that may be. So yes you might get motion sickness, but there is no certainty to this.
There’s a high likelihood that you’ll get seasick after seeing miles and miles of water around you. Well, I enjoyed that very feeling that when I saw all I found was water around us. We always live on land so why not enjoy just a few days of water.
It’s not safe to be on the ship and bad things have happened on cruises
Where is it not bad? Well, bad things happen everywhere and cruise is not an exception. Just be cautious and stay alert just like you should be at other places.
The alcoholic beverages are very expensive and will rip you off
At least I was not shocked. The prices were no different as compared to any good restaurant as far drinks are concerned.
You don’t need a balcony so don’t waste money on that
I heard this a lot from people when I was trying to book my room. The justification was that you’ll only come to your room for sleeping. But I strongly disagree with this reasoning. I really enjoyed the view of the ocean from our balcony whenever I sat there.
For now, I’ll wrap this story and will continue on the rest of the myths in subsequent posts.
